Today marked the successful launch of the last community nursery in Ohonua, Eua, officiated by the British High Commissioner to Tonga, His Excellency Philip Malone. The event was attended by distinguished guests including the British Deputy High Commissioner, MP for Eua and DPM Dr. Taniela Fusimalohi, Chairman of Live and Learn Tonga Dr. Robin Havea, Government Representative Mr. Tevita Lavemaau, the District Officer for Ohonua, women’s groups, youth, and the staff of the Live and Learn office. This collaborative event highlighted the strong partnership between local communities and international supporters.

The community nursery was co-funded by the European Union and the UK, while IFAD provided the home garden equipment and seedlings for the Ohonua community. By providing these resources, the program enables residents to carry out seedling and tree planting activities, directly supporting local food security and sustainable agricultural practices. The initiative also fosters ecological restoration and environmental protection, ensuring long-term benefits for the community and the surrounding ecosystem.

This nursery is more than a facility—it is a platform for empowerment. The program encourages the community to take an active role in managing their own food sources, planting trees, and protecting their environment. By engaging local residents, youth, and women’s groups, the initiative ensures that knowledge and skills are shared widely, strengthening community resilience and self-reliance.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all donors and partners, including the European Union, the UK, and IFAD, as well as the community of Ohonua and its leaders. Their collective efforts have made this milestone possible, demonstrating the power of partnership in driving sustainable development and environmental stewardship. The community nursery will continue to serve as a vital resource for generations to come, supporting both people and the planet.
