On 27 May 2026, beneficiaries from nine communities across Vava’u gathered at Ma’ama Mo’onia Hall in Neiafu to celebrate a truly significant milestone — the Official Handover Ceremony of the Climate Resilient Islands (CRI) Project.
Funded by the Government of New Zealand through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) and implemented by Live & Learn Tonga, the occasion marked the successful completion of years of partnership, learning, and community-driven action aimed at building stronger and more resilient island communities.
The event was graced by distinguished guests, including His Excellency Mr. Broody Sinclair, New Zealand High Commissioner to Tonga, as Guest of Honour, the Honourable Governor of Vava’u Lord Fakatulolo, Dr. Robin Havea, Chairman of the Live & Learn Tonga Board, Ms. Edith Kamundi representing Live & Learn Australia, Mr. ‘Alani Afu, Country Manager for Live & Learn Tonga, alongside representatives from the nine participating communities of Koloa, Holeva, Tu’anekivale, Ha’alaufuli, Ta’anea, Pangaimotu, ‘Utulei, ‘Utungake, and Talihau.
One of the highlights of the celebration was the community exhibits, showcasing the remarkable achievements made through the project's Food Security, Water Security and WASH, Ecosystem Restoration, Coastal Restoration, and Disaster Risk Reduction pathways. Beautiful handicrafts made from pandanus and paper mulberry also reflected how communities have strengthened livelihoods while embracing sustainable and resilient futures.
The formal presentation of certificates to the nine communities by the Guest of Honour symbolized not only the completion of the project, but also the resilience, dedication, and commitment demonstrated throughout the journey. Communities expressed their appreciation through the presentation of gifts by the Honourable Governor of Vava’u to the distinguished guests, recognizing the support and partnerships that made these achievements possible.
The remarks delivered by His Excellency Mr. Broody Sinclair and the vote of thanks from Lord Fakatulolo echoed the spirit of the day — celebrating accomplishments, honoring partnerships, and looking forward to continued collaboration in building a more resilient future.
This was more than a handover ceremony. It was a celebration of empowerment, resilience, and community leadership — and the beginning of a new chapter for the people of Vava’u.
Mālō 'aupito to all community members, partners, stakeholders, and supporters who have contributed to this journey. Together, we are building stronger, safer, and more climate-resilient island communities.
