Enhancing Water Security for Climate Resilience in Vava‘u

The Climate Resilience Island (CRI) Water Resilient Programme focuses on nine communities across Vava‘u. It was initially piloted in three communities—Talihau, Tuanekivale, and Utulei—with the aim of improving access to safe and reliable water while strengthening local resilience to climate change. Through infrastructure upgrades, sustainable water management strategies, and community engagement, the project supports long-term water security in the face of increasing climate challenges.

Over a two-week period, the CRI-WASH team carried out essential fieldwork in Talihau, Tuanekivale, and Utulei, working closely with communities to enhance water security. The construction process required strong coordination, technical expertise, and commitment, with the Drover Community Group playing a key role in leading the groundwork and ensuring quality standards were met. Community members also actively participated, reinforcing ownership and collaboration throughout the process.

Despite challenges such as weather conditions and logistical constraints, the dedication of the team and the support of the communities led to a successful implementation. The installation of concrete slabs, water tanks, and connecting gutter systems marks a significant milestone in improving water resilience for these communities.

This achievement demonstrates the strength of partnership, community engagement, and shared commitment to sustainability. The CRI-WASH team remains focused on extending this impact to other target communities in Vava‘u, ensuring broader access to safe and reliable water sources and stronger climate resilience.
