VAVA’U, TONGA — Live & Learn Tonga has successfully marked another critical milestone in strengthening disaster risk management and community preparedness, completing extensive water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) infrastructure upgrades across selected communities in Vava’u.
Funded under the Tala Kei Kapa Community Grant from the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), this year’s project implementation delivered essential sanitation safety and climate-ready facilities to the communities of Tefisi, Ofu Island, and local schools, including GMS Liviela and Ofu School.
Pivot to Impact: Meeting Real Community Needs
The project was originally envisioned to focus primarily on retrofitting existing setups. However, rigorous engineering pre-assessments revealed a more urgent reality: the most vulnerable households in the targeted zones lacked the foundational infrastructure required to withstand severe weather events.
Demonstrating agility and a deep commitment to high-impact aid, the project adapted its scope to build completely new, disaster-resilient infrastructure where it was needed most.
In total, 23 crucial sanitation interventions were successfully executed:
Mobilized in Record Time: A Three-Week Triump
Infrastructure projects of this scale typically take months, but through radical community mobilization and deep grassroots cooperation, all 23 facilities were completed in just three weeks.
Local residents, youth, and leaders in both Tefisi and Ofu stood side-by-side with the Live & Learn team, providing hands-on labor, logistical support, and invaluable local knowledge to accelerate the construction timeline.
"The smiling faces of the beneficiaries and the pure joy we witnessed after each facility was completed made every long hour worth it," shared the Live & Learn field team. "Serving the immediate needs of our people and improving their everyday living conditions to ensure they are disaster-ready is at the very core of what we do."
Looking Ahead with Gratitude
This vital milestone was made possible through the unwavering support of the Australian Government. Live & Learn Tonga extends its highest appreciation and special thanks to DFAT, the sole donor of this initiative, whose targeted grant directly empowers Tongan communities to withstand the increasing threats of natural disasters.
As the project team wraps up this successful deployment, plans are already underway for next year's implementation cycle, continuing the mission to build a safer, healthier, and more resilient Tonga.
