Climate Resilient Islands

Climate Resilient Islands

Objective

To strengthen community resilience to the impacts of climate change through nature-based approaches. The program is working with rural communities in Tonga, Vanuatu, Fiji, and Kiribati.

Project Background

The Climate Resilient Islands (CRI) Programme is a six-year regional initiative aimed at strengthening the resilience of rural communities across Tonga, Vanuatu, Fiji, Solomon Islands, Papau New Guinea and Tuvalu to the growing impacts of climate change. The program adopts nature-based solutions (NbS) to address key challenges such as water security, food production, disaster risk, and ecosystem degradation. The CRI Program is implemented in partnership with 15 communities across the Kingdom of Tonga: Ha’apai: 4 communities Vava’u: 8 communities ‘Eua: 3 communities Each community engages at least 20 representatives in training and planning activities, with resilience actions directly benefiting 20 households per site.

Our Work

The Climate Resilient Islands (CRI) Programme is a six-year initiative that works directly with rural communities across Tonga, Fiji, Vanuatu, and Kiribati to strengthen their resilience to climate change through nature-based solutions (NbS). Our work focuses on empowering island communities to identify, plan, and implement practical actions that protect their environment, improve livelihoods, and safeguard their future. We do this by: 🛠️ Building Community Resilience Plans through participatory workshops and community profiling 🌱 Restoring ecosystems that support food, water, and disaster protection 🚰 Improving access to clean water and climate-resilient food systems 👥 Training 20 local representatives per community in leadership, disaster risk reduction (DRR), and NbS 🏠 Supporting 20 households per site with direct resilience actions 💡 Delivering small grants for community-led solutions 📊 Monitoring change and reflecting with communities to improve outcomes over time We are working with 15 communities in Tonga—including those in Ha’apai, Vava’u, and ‘Eua—to implement these solutions in partnership with local leaders and governments. Our work is supported by the New Zealand Government through the Resilient Ecosystems for Climate Change Adaptation (RECCA) program.
