Objective

The objective of Climate and WASH Resilience Community Project (CRW) is to provide a healthy, inclusive living environment for vulnerable communities through the improvement of accessible sanitation and hygiene facilities, promotion of nature-based solutions for food security, and the empowerment of women, youth, people living with disability, and community leaders to take the lead on climate action and sustainable development.

Project Background

The Climate and WASH Resilience Community Project (CRW), funded by the European Union, IFAD and the UK Department for International Development, aims to improve health, equity, and climate resilience in vulnerable communities across Tonga. The project addresses urgent needs in sanitation and hygiene access, while also promoting sustainable food production and climate adaptation through nature-based solutions. It recognizes the growing risks posed by climate change—especially for rural and underserved areas—and responds with practical, community-driven interventions. At its core, the project empowers women, youth, people with disabilities, and local leaders to lead change. By integrating inclusive participation with training, infrastructure support, and governance strengthening, the project builds long-term capacity for community-led climate action and sustainable development. The result is not just improved infrastructure—but stronger, more resilient communities prepared for the future.

Our Work

Our work focuses on improving the daily lives of vulnerable communities by strengthening access to clean water, safe sanitation, and hygiene services, while also supporting communities to adapt to climate change. We work hand-in-hand with villages to rehabilitate or build inclusive WASH facilities, promote safe hygiene practices, and implement climate-smart food systems using nature-based solutions like home gardening and agroecology. Alongside infrastructure, we invest in people. Through training and mentoring, we support women, youth, and people with disabilities to become leaders in their communities. We also strengthen local decision-making by supporting village councils, committees, and community groups to take ownership of their climate and WASH development priorities. This integrated, inclusive approach ensures that our work is locally driven, sustainable, and tailored to the unique needs of each community.
